Learn how to use Odif 505 temporary glue spray for patchwork, applique, and machine embroidery. Step-by-step tips to hold fabric without pins or basting.

Quick answer

Use Odif 505 temporary glue spray to hold fabric layers together instead of pins or basting. Apply a light, even mist to one surface, press the layers together, and sew while the adhesive is still tacky. It evaporates with handling and washes out completely.

Why use a temporary spray adhesive instead of pins?

Pins and hand basting work, but they add steps and can shift small pieces. A temporary spray adhesive holds the entire surface flat, which is especially useful for patchwork with three layers, applique shapes, and machine embroidery where hooping can distort the fabric. Odif 505 is repositionable, so you can lift and adjust pieces before sewing. It does not stain fabric, and it disappears with washing.

When Odif 505 is not the right choice

Odif 505 is a temporary adhesive, not a permanent bond. Do not use it as the only join for a seam that will be washed without stitching. Also, test on a scrap of delicate or dark fabric first: even though the manufacturer states it does not stain, some fabrics may show a faint residue if too much spray is applied. For permanent hemming or applique that will not be sewn, choose a permanent textile glue instead.

How to apply Odif 505 step by step

  1. Prepare your work area and test the spray: Cover your table with newspaper or a protective cloth. Shake the can well, then spray a light coat onto a scrap of your fabric from about 20–25 cm away. Wait a few seconds and press another scrap on top to check for residue or discoloration. Always test on a scrap first; some fabrics may show a faint mark if sprayed too heavily.
  2. Apply a light, even mist to one surface: Hold the can upright and spray a thin, even layer onto the wrong side of the piece you want to hold down (or onto the stabilizer). Use short passes rather than one heavy coat. A little goes a long way. Over-spraying is the most common mistake: it can leave a sticky feel and waste product.
  3. Press the layers together and adjust: Wait 10–20 seconds for the adhesive to become tacky, then place the second fabric layer on top and smooth it flat with your hands. Because Odif 505 is repositionable, you can lift and re-position pieces before sewing. Press firmly but do not rub, which can stretch bias edges.
  4. Sew while the adhesive is still tacky: Sew your seam or applique stitch as usual. The adhesive holds the layers without pins, so you can sew right up to the edge. For machine embroidery, hoop the stabilized fabric and stitch. If the adhesive feels dry, apply a fresh light mist rather than adding more pressure.
  5. Clean up and remove residue: After sewing, peel apart any temporary bonds. Odif 505 evaporates with handling and washes out in normal laundry. If you notice a sticky area on your needle or machine bed, wipe with a damp cloth. Store the can upright at room temperature; a clogged nozzle can be cleared by rinsing with warm water.
